This gift is for the birds...

Here is a cute Mother's day gift idea that the kids can make with a little help. Not only is the gift from the heart because it was homemade, but Mom/Grandma can use it for some great birdwatching later.
The original instructions are for valentines themed bird treats. Switch out the cookie cutter shape and ribbon color and use this idea for Mother's day or even Christmas.

Thanks Chi Town Cheapskate for this project idea!

Mother's Day

Mother's Day will be here before you know it. Here are a few great ideas to get your creative juices flowing and help you celebrate without breaking the bank...please post any additional ideas you have in the comments below.
  1. Grab her a deal for a spa day etc off of a daily deal site. Check out the quick links above.
  2. Grab a discounted Easter basket and use some inexpensive spray paint to paint it a neutral color (like white), then fill it with items that are special to her.
    • Cooking basket full of cooking tools and specialty foods and/or grocery store gift card
    • Spa basket filled with bath salts, bubble bath etc.
    • Movie basket, filled with microwave popcorn, candy and some of her favorite movies
  3. Frame artwork - have the kids make a picture for mom and put it into a great frame for the wall. If you kids are too small to make their own, consider doing hand/feet prints instead. Be sure you don't forget to write the child's name and date in the corner before framing.
  4. Write Mom a poem, or make her some hand print flowers. Give it to her when you serve her breakfast in bed.
  5. Go online and create a photo book full of special memories you've had with her. You can frequently find daily deals for these making them very affordable.
  6. Don't fight the crowd, cook Mom her favorite meal. Make sure the kids do the bulk of the cooking. Ensure clean up is part of the plan....don't leave Mom with the mess.

Glow in the dark food

Found this on Our Best Bits blog and thought it looked like so much fun I just had to share. What a great idea to use as a teaching moment (for home schoolers) or as a slumber party treat (one I bet the kids talk about for days).

The secret to glowing food is tonic water (diet tonic water works too).  It contains quinine, and guess what happens when you expose quinine to black light?
fun, right??  So if you mix up a drink (like crystal light lemonade like I’ve done below) and add a little tonic water…
magical glowing beverages! Pretty much anything you can make that includes water can glow with tonic water.  Like Jello for example:
My kids thought that glowing jello was pretty much the coolest thing ever.
Now tonic water does have a nasty bitter taste to it.  My kids actually didn’t notice at all, which I thought was strange.  Maybe I’m just super sensitive.  I don’t like the flavor, so if you’re like me know that you only need a little to make it glow.  Adding a bit to juice or punch isn’t very noticeable.  And if you do jello, you can use part regular water (half and half, or even less tonic) to minimize the bitter taste.

Hasbro coupons

Right now you can go to coupons.com and also to Play Saver and grab multiple Hasbro coupons. There have been some recent sales and promos making these items only a couple of bucks after coupons. Even if you are not in the market to buy today, you may still consider printing them for those "last minute birthday party runs".

English Muffin Breakfast Pizzas

Sounds way better, and is way cheaper than grabbing a version of these at the local gas station doesn't it! Serve with a side of fresh fruit and a cold glass of milk for a complete meal.

6 whole wheat English muffins at room temperature
4 eggs, at room temperature
2 tablespoons milk
1/4 tsp. kosher salt
About 10 dashes Tabasco sauce
12 thin deli slices of ham or 10-12 slices of cooked bacon, crumbled
3/4-1 c. shredded cheddar or pepper jack cheese
Optional: Chopped vegetables like green onions, tomatoes, sliced olives, mushrooms, green peppers, etc.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray liberally with non-stick cooking spray or brush with oil or melted butter. Set aside.
In a pie plate, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and Tabasco sauce. Gently pull apart each English muffin and soak each side (like you would for French toast) in the egg mixture–you want the egg mixture to soak into the bread, but you don’t want the English muffin to be completely falling apart. Place the muffin, cut side up, on the baking sheet.
If using ham, slice the ham into thin strips and then place on top of the English muffins. If using bacon, just sprinkle the crumbled bacon on top. Add any additional desired toppings and then sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake for 15 minutes and serve immediately.

FREEZER INSTRUCTIONS: After baking, loosen them from the baking sheet with a spatula and then allow them to cool completely. Transfer the baking sheet to the freezer. When the pizzas are solid, transfer them to a large Ziploc freezer bag. To reheat, place on a plate and microwave for 1 1/2 minutes at a time until the pizza is heated through (actual time will depend on how powerful your microwave is).

Recipe and picture pulled from Our Best Bites blog, sounds delish doesn't it!

Gas saving tips

We've all noticed that gas prices are up significantly from this time last year. I ran across this great article from Green Dad columnist Lou Carlozo that has some great gas saving tips and thought it was worth re-posting.

STP Gas treatment.
If you’ve ever wanted to treat your car to real jet fuel (or a product made from it), now’s your chance with STP Gas Treatment. This much-lauded additive cleans your engine and fuel intake system while fighting fuel-line freeze, thus boosting your car’s performance and mileage. And while gas prices keep going up, this stuff is actually dropping in price, now $1.79 at amazon.com for 8 oz., enough to treat a tank. You should use it a few times to see full benefits, but you most likely will: some say at least 10% improved mileage, all while protecting your engine. Just bought some myself, and can’t wait to use it.

Gasbuddy.com.
This website, up for more than eight years, ranks among the granddaddies when it comes to finding low, low gas prices. It updates the cheapest prices in the past 24 hours for specific states all over the country. There’s also a Gasbuddy app for the iPhone you can download, too. Joining Gasbuddy.com is free, and once you do, you could win $250 in free gas. Hey, that’s as good as liquid gold these days.

GasPriceWatch.com.
GasPriceWatch works in similar fashion to Gasbuddy, and has been around just as long. Here’s to giving you another online arsenal in the fight to save at the pump, as it’s entirely possible that a rock-bottom price missed by Gasbuddy will be captured by GasPriceWatch, and vice versa. GPW also has a cool stat at the upper right of its home page that shows the highest and lowest gas prices in the U.S. As of late Tuesday, the high was in Kailua Kona, Hawaii ($4.21) and the low in Rocker, Mont. ($3.08)

Inflate those tires!
Countless studies have shown that cars with properly inflated and balanced tires get better gas mileage — around 3.3%, according to government stats. If you’re really in a miserly mood, look for those rare gas stations that still offer free air; it might run you 50 cents or so otherwise.

Change your oil, and put the right oil in.
This is key for older cars especially, which in many cases will benefit from using 5W-30 motor oil. Again, the feds tell us that the right oil grade will save you another 1-2% in gas mileage — see how all this is adding up? But the next time Mr. Quickie Oil Change Dude tells you to replace the air filter, consider taking a pass. While some folks say this will boost mileage, government studies show that a new air filter, while it will improve engine performance, won’t help much in the gas department.

Go over the big-city line to buy gas.
In large urban areas such as Chicago, gasoline is heavily taxed and thus more expensive. Odd as it may seem, you can drive to gas stations just across the street from Chicago’s city limits and find gas that’s much cheaper. Beyond that, keep your eyes peeled for especially busy stations, a sure sign that prices there are very low. But don’t drive too far out of your way to get the cheap stuff, as a long trip may negate any savings you realize. (I plan suburban gas buying sprees around necessary errands.)

Buy low-octane gasoline.
If you’re among the suckers, er, consumers, who buy high-octane gas because you think it gives you better gas mileage, I’m sorry to say that experts agree this is a waste of money. Props to the folks at Bankrate.com for pointing this out, along with other gas-saving tips you can read here. Bottom line: Unless your car specifically requires premium, skip it and go for low-octane fuel.

Just. Don’t. Drive. (Duh.)
It’s amazing of how many Americans consider cars a Constitutional Birthright, right up there with free speech and unlimited Twinkies for all. True, it’s hard to get around without a car in the ’burbs. But now’s the time to ask yourself some tough questions: Is it time to get rid of my fuel-hogging SUV? Should I hop on my bike instead and take a step towards eliminating a spare tire of a different sort? Can I walk to the pharmacy? Isn’t it time I learned the public transit routes in my town? I’ll tell you what: Every time I take the train or bus instead, I’m doing all sorts of business, and nixing errands off my to-do list, via my iPhone. And you can’t do that behind the wheel. (Though just today, I saw at least five geniuses trying to text and drive at the same time. Heaven forbid a pedestrian should dart out in front of them.)

Other alternatives exist to replace those gas shackles with a thinking cap: We can carpool. We can trade in our wasteful cars for more fuel-efficient ones. We can put all of our trips in a straight line, instead of doubling back again and again to make 15 separate convenience store runs. We can. No sense in getting held up at the pump when we can hold the line through good habits and common sense.

DIY baby wipes

If you young kids who are still in diapers, this DIY project is for you. Here is a way to make your own baby wipes, compliments of Chasing Tiny Feet.

1 roll of Bounty (or another thick, quality brand) paper towels
2-1/4 cups of water
2 Tbsp. baby bath or shampoo
1 Tbsp. baby oil
  1. Cut the roll of towels in half (an electric knife works well) and place in a container.  You can also separate the towels into a neat pile that will be ready to use.
  2. Mix all liquid ingredients together and pour over top of the towels.
  3. Let the liquid absorb into the towels.  When ready to use, remove the cardboard center (if you left it in) and pull the towels from the middle.
She reuses all the store bought wipe containers to store the homemade wipes in.  She puts the recipe to the front of the wipes container so it is easy to find when she needs to make them again. Of course if you don't have any that store this size roll, you could also make your own using a tupperware type container as in the pic below.

$50 Birthday party idea

I-Spy themed party

Most kids are familiar with the book or TV show "I Spy," where common household items, toys, and everything in between becomes a visual treasure hunt.
  • Host an "I Spy" party by placing odds and ends around your house in unique ways. Put a sponge in the corner, a teddy bear on a chair, or a rubber ducky in the tub.
  • Call out "I Spy" clues throughout the party and play different rounds with a variety of categories. Start with "I Spy Colors." For example, the leader would say, "I spy with my little eye something that is red and means love," and the kids will shout out, "heart pillow" when they see the pillow on the couch.
  • Other categories can include: "I Spy Letters," where the leader would say, "I spy with my little eye something that begins with 'B' that a monkey eats," meaning a banana. Mix it up with "I Spy Animals" and "I Spy Mommies." Then take it outside for a round of "I Spy Nature."
  • The party will feel like an ongoing treasure hunt packed with fun from the moment guests arrive to the time that they leave.
Use this cost breakdown as a guide for your budget party planning
1. Invites: $0  - Use Celebrations.com online invitations.

2. Decorations: $5 - Most of the themes in our $50 Budget Kids' Birthday Parties make creative use of items around the house or yard, which are free!
  • However, balloons really make a kid's day and are worth the cost. Pick up a pack of latex balloons, blow them up instead of filling them with helium, and tape them around the party to perk up the space.
  • Create a homemade birthday banner by taping together paper that you have on hand. Decorate it with crayons, markers, glitter and whatever else your child has in their box of arts and crafts. You can also cut out letters that spell "Happy Birthday" and glue them on the banner or hang them individually as a sign.
3. Party Supplies: $10 - Go for the fun cake plates at your child's birthday party. You could shop the Dollar store and really save on party supply costs.
  • Buy a set of themed plates, such as a licensed Disney character or a famous super hero, which should cost around $4. Then round out the supplies with a set of generic "Happy Birthday" plates, napkins, and cups from the 99-Cent Store.
  • Make a stack of alternating premium and generic plates and use them for cake (go with finger food snacks). Kids may beg for the piece of cake with the sugar flower on it, but will rarely request a specific plate.
  • Save money (and the environment!) by using your own forks or utensils instead of buying plastic.
4. Games and Activities: $0 - These party themes were designed with no-cost activities or budget buys as in the Make Your Own Volcano Party. Along with the activities suggested for each theme, play classic birthday party games like Musical Chairs or Simon Says--they're free and fun for kids.

5. Favors: $ 10 - My favorite place to shop for party favors is the Dollar store. Sometimes you can find 4-packs of Play Dough, a set of princess crowns, or a pack of toys each for 99 cents, which is a total score!
  • A value pack of assorted wrapped candy or a bag of Pinata fillers are also ideal for budget party favors.
  • An 8-count pack of loot bags from the Dollar store will hold an assortment of candy or small toys and for larger items--like a princess crown or plastic airplane--simply wrap them with gift paper or tie curling ribbon on them.
6. Homemade Birthday Cake and Candles: $ 15 - The birthday cake is the highlight for most kids at the party and certainly the guest of honor. Therefore, here's where you need to spend a little money on unless a relative or friend gives your child the cake as a gift. If you are not a baker, consider shopping your grocery store freezer for a cake instead of the bakery.

7. Snacks and Drinks: $10 - Most kids eat chips, pretzels, and Goldfish as a snack, depending on their age.
  • Choose a couple of age-appropriate "finger food" snacks, fill in with a value bag of candy, and you're good to go.
  • Instead of expensive individual packs of juice, buy a couple of envelopes of Kool-Aid/Lemonade and mix it all up in a pitcher for guests to drink, along with a pitcher of water.
8. Estimated Total Cost: $50
Thanks go out to http://www.celebrations.com/ for their great idea and photo!

I am TOTALLY going to try and make this for my kids this year, but take it one step farther. I am going to use a chocolate cake, then make a white rabbit with white icing, and add some coconut on top of the frosting to represent the hair. Sounds like a great big "snowball" to me - delish!

DIY packaged oatmeal

If you enjoy the convience of oatmeal but are on a budget or simply prefer better control on what is in it...this DIY recipe is for you. One of my fellow bargain hunters took the time to taste test several different oatmeal combos with her family and this is the recipe that Life As A Mom came up with. I also added a recipe I had used myself in the past. Both recipes will work out to be much cheaper than the traditional store purchased packets.

For each little bag, she ended up combining the following ingredients. Each packet is ready to go into a bowl with water and microwave....Viola, breakfast is ready!
  • 1/4 cup quick oats
  • 1 teaspoon milk powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Here is a version that I had used for myself in the past. It is a higher in protein and has the fruit added instead of the brown sugar/cinnamon flavor.
  • 1/4 C quick oats
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (your brand preference, I like MaxPro)
Then when I was ready to cook it, I simply added the water and microwaved. When the oatmeal was done I would scoop out a snack cup of fruit & cream (aka white sugar stuff and canned fruit) into the bowl.

TRU BOGO deal

Toys R Us is having a BOGO Sale on Fisher Price Toys. Here is how it works - You buy a Fisher Price toy priced at $24.99 or more and then you get a FREE Fisher Priced toy priced UP to $24.99. You should be able to use a coupon for both items. Use this link to grab some Fisher Price Coupons you can use for the deal!

CIC coupon alert

The Coupon Information Corporation (CIC) just listed a new counterfeit coupon that is circulating.  It is for $2/2 Johnson & Johnson products as seen above. The one printed from coupons.com or the bricks coupon is not counterfeit, BUT it appears someone had turned it into a PDF.  If you see the PDF circulating, DO NOT print it.  The bad news is that if you have a legitimate coupon in your binder/organizer, you will need to go ahead and destroy it. If you have already used the coupon, there is nothing you can do.  Chances are it was the legitimate one from the bricks software anyway. It only takes one rotten apple to spoil it for the rest of us....

Flavored whipped cream

Admittedly making real whipped cream is more expensive then using cool whip, but it tastes soooo much better. Did you know that you could make your own flavored whipping cream? Click here to be taken to the "how to" page which will tell the beginner how to do it and also give you some basic flavor options to mix in. Impress your guests and make your big family meal just a little more special by making some real flavored whipping cream.

DIY Granite cleaner

If you are lucky enough to have granate in your home, you know there are lots of do's and don'ts to taking care of it. A fellow blogger took the time to do the research in making her own "green" cleaner that seems to work well. This is WAY cheaper than the $8-12 a bottle pre-made stuff! When cleaning it is reccomended that you use a granite cleaning cloth or chamois because the smooth nap will make for a streak free finish.

Here is her recipe, simply put it all into a spray bottle and shake gently to mix.
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
3 drops of dish detergent
1 cup water
A few drops of essential oil can be added for scent if desired

Note that she stayed away from  acidic cleaners, citrus based cleansers (such as lemon), vinegar and windex because all will affect the surface or sealer with repeated use. Great job Chasing Tiny Feet!

Freezing eggs

Once you’ve separated eggs you often only use either the whites or the yolks.  Instead of tossing the unused portion, you can freeze them.

Whole Eggs:  To freeze whole eggs or yolks crack them into a bowl and gently stir to break up the yolk somewhat. Try not to incorporate air into the eggs. Label the container with the date and the number of eggs. They can be kept frozen for a year, and should be thawed in the refrigerator the day before you intend to use them.

Egg Yolks:  To inhibit yolks from getting lumpy during storage, stir in a 1/2-teaspoon salt per 1-cup of egg or yolks. If using for desserts, use 1-tablespoon sugar or corn syrup per 1-cup yolks or whole eggs. Label the container with the date and the number of egg yolks. Use up extra egg yolks in recipes like sauces, custards, ice cream, yellow cakes, mayonnaise, scrambled eggs, and cooked puddings.

Egg Whites:  Raw egg whites do not suffer from freezing (cooked egg whites are very rubbery). No salt or sugar is needed. Break and separate the eggs one at a time, making sure that no yolk gets into the whites. Pour into trays and freeze until firm. Label the container with the date and the number of egg whites. Use up extra egg whites in boiled frostings (i.e., 7-minute frosting), meringue cookies, angel food cake, white cakes, or meringue for pies.

Hard-Cook Egg Yolks:  Hard-cooked egg yolks can be frozen to use later for toppings or garnishes. Carefully place the yolks in a single layer in a saucepan and add enough water to come at least I inch above the yolks. Cover and quickly bring just to boiling. Remove from the heat and let stand, covered, in the hot water about 15 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon, drain well and package for freezing.

Hard-cooked whole eggs and whites become tough and watery when frozen, so don't freeze them.

McDonalds Coupons

The Spring edition of their $1 coupon booklets are now available. You pay $1 for the booklet and will get 12 coupons for FREE kids food items.

The way they work is that you can use one coupon item per child per visit. I have 2 kids so I use 2 coupons whenever we visit. For example I would order myself the largest extra value meal (splitting the fries with the 2 kids) and then use the coupons for the kids to get a hamburger, and ordering them each a milk for $1. I can typically feed 3 of use for ~$6 with the coupons. We use the extra drink and apple coupons for those drive thru trips on days when we are running errands (yes, my kids eat snacks in the car). These make for a cheap healthy snack on the road (minus the caramel dip of course, that we save for apples at home).

Of course these are inteneded as Easter give aways, so they work great for hiding in plastic eggs as well. Not all locations have them, so please comment if you can confirm they are at your local McDs and what location you found them at.

Hasbro coupons

Hasbro wants to ensure it's share of the game market yet again, woo hoo for us! Right now you can go to http://www.coupons.com/ and print $32 in Hasbro coupons for various games. Target has several of these items on sale this week, so the timing is right to grab a few. Make sure you use your red card so that you can save the extra 5%. Reguardless of the retailer you choose, most of these coupons do not have a size specified, so they may be used on the travel/pocket version if you are able to find them. Pocket sized games make great Easter basket fillers and stocking stuffers (hint hint). Even if you are not in the market to buy today, you may still consider printing them for those "last minute birthday party runs".

Baked oatmeal...yummy!

If you haven't already figured it out...I love things that can be thrown together and baked easily in a caserole pan or pie plate. Well, here is yet another such recipe I found. Serve this recipe with some fresh fruit and a glass of cold milk and your in business. Way cheaper than stoping at the neighborhood bakery for a sweat treat...

Baked Oatmeal
Recipe adapted from Allrecipes.com by Our Best Bites.
3 c. oats (not quick-cooking)
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. Craisins, raisins, dried cherries, or other dried fruit
1 c. milk
1/2 c. butter, melted (you can substitute applesauce for 1/4 c. of the butter if you want)
2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, and Craisins. In a smaller bowl, mis together the milk, butter, vanilla, and eggs. Add the liquid mixture to the dry mixture and whisk to combine. Pour into a deep 9″ pie plate or an 8×8″ or 9×9″ baking dish. Bake for 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Serve immediately with a splash of warmed milk. Serves 8.
Thanks to Our Best Bites for the recipe and picture.

Extra sunday papers

I have seen time and time again advice from couponer websites that you should purchase 1 paper for every person in your household. While I have not committed to that, I wonder what happens to those extra newspapers. If you have an extra newspaper, here are some ideas to consider after pulling out your coupon insets.
  • Ask a neighbor if they would like to read it. In this tough economy many people who enjoy the paper have cancelled their subscriptions to save money.
  • Ask your kids teacher if they need them for any upcoming class projects. Often newspaper is used in the craft room as table covers or for paper mache projects.
  • Use a crunched up piece of paper to clean your glass. Simply spray with cleaner and use the waded paper to wipe.
  • Contact your local pet shelter and see if they need them for cage liners.
  • If you know someone who is moving, they make great wrap to protect breakable items such as dishes.
  • Save the funny pages and use them as gift wrap.
  • And of course....recycle them

Family movie night

I know I have put a lot of codes up recently for cheap movie rentals. Here are some tips that will help you how to make family movie night extra fun.

5 Fun Tips For Family Movie Nights:
  1. Make it an event. Make the evening something special by creating a platter of goodies for everyone.
  2. Roll out the Red Carpet. Have the kids work on decorations throughout the week to hang in your TV room and get a cheap bolt of red cloth that you roll out by the entrance only on family movie night.
  3. Put the kids in charge! Provide the kids with a few colorful treats and let them put the platter of goodies together.
  4. Build up the excitement. During family dinner, debate movie options throughout the week. You can even organize a family vote, complete with secret ballots, to do your own best picture award nominations.
  5. Create a movie series. Focus on a theme for the month to tie your movie nights together. Last month we featured only dog movies. The previous month kept us singing with only musicals. Other good ones are fairytales, super heroes and old family favorites.
