***HOT*** $.33 movie rentals

This awesome Groupon is only available for 2 days, and gets you 3 rental codes for just $1! It is listed as a national deal that will pop up at the top of any city page. The Groupon needs to purchased now, but the rental codes can be used anytime before 6/1/11. There is a limit of buying only 1 for yourself, but they will allow your to buy 2 extra as gifts.
  1. Sign up with Groupon by clicking here.
  2. Choose your city by clicking the little arrow to the right of the default city displayed.
  3. Find the deal on the main page or in the right sidebar. Sometimes national deals will also be offered via a box at the top of the page (this is one of them).
  4. Click on ‘Buy’ and complete your order.
  5. Your Groupon will be available by noon the next day in your account under ‘My Stuff’ -> ‘My Groupons’
Groupon tips:
  • I tend to buy "gifts" for my hubby etc when they have a purchase limit for a great deal. I simply tell the system that I prefer to print it myself so that I can pull it up in my link instead of depending on them to do it for me.
  • Be sure to check others cities as well. Places you will be traveling to, near family, etc… This is one way to save cash when you know you will be eating out.

Printable grocery store coupons

Here are a few printable grocery coupons from recent mailings and posts. I will try and continue to add as they come in, so check back for more later. A few things you need to remember....
  1. Most coupons can be printed twice by using the back button
  2. Several stores will let you pair up a manufacture coupon with a store coupon to double dip. You can tell what type of coupon it is by the header that says "manufacture coupon" or something like "Target coupon" instead.
  3. Coupon websites periodically reset (every 30 days or more), if you've printed it before, it might not hurt to go back and try to print it again.

Cutting utility bills

  1. Do you know what a camp shower is? A camp shower is when you have a limited volume of water (or warm water) so you turn the water off when you don't actually need it. Why not take camp showers at home. Consider getting into the shower, wetting yourself down and then turning off the water while you soap up, turning it on again to rinse and be done. Shutting off the water when not in use can cut your water budget.
  2. Turn off the lights. This sounds really simple, but we still don't do it.
  3. Unplug appliances when not in use. Some appliances continue to drain small amounts of electricity even when turned off. If you have several in a room, consider using a power strip with one master "off" switch.
  4. Close vents off to unused rooms. Why heat and cool rooms you are not using. If you close off the vent, you need to also consider putting a magnet over the intake vent as well, these are available in most hardware stores or by mail order. The exception to this rule is if you have a room that is not well insulated that also has pipes in it that could freeze.
  5. Cook in the oven in the winter, and use the crock pot or grill in the summer. Using cooking methods that don't fight your thermostat will help keep your furnace/AC from working extra hard.
  6. Seal off drafts. Drafts are like throwing money away. Even if you are not handy, you can at least use the shrink film over leaking windows, put a draft dodger in front of a door and buy some spray foam to fill in foundation cracks.
  7. Get a programmable thermostat. Program you thermostat down by 5-10 degrees when you are not home or while you sleep.
  8. Keep you filters clean. Dirty filers make appliances work harder, the biggest culprit is your furnace/AC unit.
  9. Replace you light bulbs with a more energy efficient one. These can be fairly expensive, so clip those coupons, grab them on sale and replace them as the old ones burn out. If you can afford to by several at a time, replace your most frequently used lights first.
  10. Catch rainwater and use to water plants. This of course only works when the temperatures are above freezing.

Potluck

Being on a budget doesn't mean you have to give up your social life, only that you need to adjust it. Why not invite some friends over for a potluck dinner and game night. Of course if your first one is a success, odds are good that your friends will want to reciprocate, giving you yet another night of fun.

Here are some tips to getting the potluck parties going -
  • As the host/hostess you should plan on making the main dishes (such as sandwiches and a veggie tray) and having at least one general beverage available (such as punch) for the group. As you tell people that this will be potluck, let them know what you are making, and have them tell you what they think they would like to bring. Keep in mind that there is not a "wrong" dish to bring, this is simply to avoid duplication.
  • Don't be afraid to invite someone who doesn't cook. If they do not like to cook, they have other options and can still be a lot of fun. They always have the option to purchase something pre-prepared or can simply be in charge of drinks or snacks.
  • Consider activities that force people to interact such as Bunco. If you've ever gone to a function where you don't know anybody and ended up sitting on a chair boarded...you know what I mean. Games are a great way to do this, or at least to get everyone well acquainted at the beginning.
  • Most games work for up to 6 people, so consider having a group of 3 couples. If one couple does not end up making it, there are still enough to have a great time. If you decide to play multiple tables, consider inviting at least 4 couples.
  • Everyone loves to win a prize, so why not have a few on hand for the winners of each game. Prizes can be something useful or funny, but either way, they should not break the bank.

Homemade coutons

You'all know that I am a girl who beleives in using what she has on hand to prepare meals. So this recipe is not about getting something for less that what it cost in the store...it's about saving money by using up what you have instead of buying something new.

Homemade croutons
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
  2. Mix your favorite fresh or dried herbs and spices with 1/4 cup olive oil.
  3. Lightly brush flavored oil on both sides of bread slices.
  4. Stack as many slices as you can cut at one time.
  5. Cut into cubes the size of your choice.
  6. Spread cubes in single layer on large baking sheet.
  7. Bake until cubes are dry and crisp. Time will depend on the size and thickness of cubes, about 45 minutes.
  8. Let cool completely.
  9. Store in an airtight container.
  10. Use within one week or freeze up to 6 months.
Tips:
  • Use low-fat dressing for a low-fat alternative to oil.
  • Croutons can be ground up and used like bread crumbs.
  • Sprinkle cheese on them, just as they come out of the oven.

  • How much room do I have to store this?
  • If I have this on hand, will I be tempted to eat the whole thing on a whim?
