Homemade butter

Small and big kids both will love this activity. All you need is a carton of whipping cream and a clean jar (such as a baby food jar or small jelly jar), and some cheese cloth. You can use a larger jar (such as a canning jar), just remember that the bigger the jar, the harder it is for kids to shake and the longer you will need to shake it.

Fill the jar halfway with whipping cream; tightly screw the lid back on. Take turns shaking the jar. You'll need to continue shaking, then the cream will start becoming whipped (like whipped topping). Keep shaking the cream for another few minutes or so and you'll notice lumps of butter beginning to form. Empty the contents of the jar into the cheese cloth to squeeze out the excess liquid. Add salt, if desired, and refrigerate.

This is a great project to give the kids to do the day or so before Thanksgiving so that they can "help" prepare somthing that goes on the table for the family feast.
