DIY Reuseable Ice packs

Admittedly I am a frozen pea or corn sorta ice pack girl, but for those of you who prefer a dedicated "ice pack" in your freezer, here is a great recipe, and just in time for summer.

What you need:
Quart sized ziploc type bags (freezer strength with double or tripple seals)
Rubbing alcohol
Dish soap (cheap brands work fine)
Wash cloths (great use for mismatched ones)
Strip velcro
Needle & Thread (to sew wash cloths)

  1. Take two wash cloths and sew velcro strip along one edge (male on one, female on the other). Put cloths with velcro facing out and sew remaing three sides of washcloths together. Now turn it rightside out and you have a pouch for your homemade ice pack. Its important never to put an ice pack directly on the skin, so this is now your ensurance that you kids won't pull it out of the freezer and do that....because you will already have a cover on it (and a hand washable one at that).
  2. In one of your baggies, mix 2 parts dishsoap to 1 parts rubbing alcohol, bag should be about 2/3 full when done. Seal bag and mix well. Now "burp" the air out of your bag and put it inside another bag to help avoind unwanted leaks later. I've even considdered tripple bagging it, but if you store it in your washcloths you really don't need to.
  3. Put "guts" of ice pack into wash cloth cover and freeze. That's it! Now how easy was that....
