Using coupons on trial sizes

Using coupons are a great way to save some cash. Sometimes coupons do NOT have a size restriction making for some free trial sized items. I know I have snagged some free Axe body wash recently, and pictured below is a free bottle of Dove body wash I got a few weeks back. Each store has its own unique way of dealing with these trial size coupon scenerios. Some stores allow you to take the extra cash you would earn from the coupon and apply it to your total purchase, which is also known as a coupon overage. Other stores give you the item for free, but not the overage. A few stores try not to allow you to use it on a trial sized item at all even if they coupon says you can. So what do you check if you get up to the register and the coupon beeps? If any the below items are not met, the store should not use your coupon. Its best to be sure to check all of these things BEFORE you get to the register, but sometimes "beeps" still happen.
  • Do you have the correct product and coupon
  • Verify that there was not a size restriction on the coupon
  • Look and see if the trial size is made by the same manufacture as the larger sizes (some contract another company to make this size)

The most recent coupon to cause this problem is for $2 off any size Tide item. The travel/trial size of Tide is packaged by another company, thus the coupon is not valid on this size. Using a coupon in a way that it is not intended is considered coupon fraud, and legal action can be taken against you.
