DIY - Girls ruffled t-shirt skirt

Looking for a way to use make your money stretch? Well, here is a step by step instruction guide on how to make a mens t-shirt into a young girls skirt. If you have a sewing machine and a t-shirt someone has outgrown, here is an opportunity to make a new skirt for school. Click here for the full tutoral from Clay In His Hands with step by step photos.

Cut a straight line right under the armholes of the shirt. You should end up with a squarish or rectangular shape. The bottom is the hemmed part.

You will need some elastic cut to approx. 2 inches smaller than the waist measurement. Check it on your model to be sure it fits right. {I used 1 inch elastic, but you can use whatever you like}.

Cut four 1 inch strips off the top of your t-shirt fabric square. These will become your ruffles.

Clip the strips so you have four long pieces. Two will make the top ruffle and two will make the bottom ruffle.

Set your machine to a basting stitch and sew down the middle of the strips {lengthwise}, attaching two strips together so that you have two strips total when finished. Pull thread at the ends to gather.

Pin ruffles to skirt where you want them.

Sew the ruffles to the skirt by sewing down the middle of the strips {on top of your basting stitch}.

Using a serger or a zig-zag stitch, finish the top edge of the skirt.

Fold the top edge down to create a casing for your elastic. Make sure that you will be able to slide the elastic in after the casing is sewn down. Sew casing, leaving a 2 inch gap unsewn.

Put elastic into casing. Using a safety pin atatched to the end of the elastic makes it easier to pull through. Overlap the elastic ends and stitch together.

Stitch the opening in the casing closed. Voila! You're finished!
