If you vacation includes flying, make sure you are aware of the luggage size and weight restrictions for the airline you will be traveling on. Over the last few years these guidelines have changed, and if you do not comply, you could be paying extra cash at the counter. If you suitcases that "nest", consider packing the smaller one inside the larger one. This will allow you the luxury of an extra suitcase (if you need it) to come home. Of course luggage is subject to an extra bag fee, so if you are able to, consider having your souvenirs shipped home. Many tourist shops will do this for you at a reduced rate. This means that you don't have to worry about it taking up luggage space and it can arrive home shortly after you do.
** Don't forget to measure your carry on as well. Whatever bag you pick, it need to be able to fit completely under the seat in front of you. There is not normally a weight restriction for your carry on. When you pack your 3-1-1 bag, make sure that you include any cosmetics that may be in your purse (ie lip gloss etc). Depending on who the screener is will depend on if they will allow you to keep this separate from your Ziploc bag.
