For those of you shopping for food on a budget, have you considered shopping at Aldi? Aldi is a no-frills chain of stores that carries a smaller selection off grocery items (most are packaged under their brands) at a significantly reduced price. Each store has a different square footage, so what they carry will vary from store to store. When you go, be sure to bring your own bags, otherwise you will be hunting for a box (or buying a bag) to haul your purchases home. They accept cash, food stamps and debt cards (no checks or credit cards). This is a great place to grab up dairy and produce items that do not normally have coupons!
Here are some items I have tried and
would reccomend to buy here if you don't have/use coupons for them -
- Milk
- Margarine
- Cheese
- Produce
- Canned rolls
- Cottage cheese
- Eggs
- Canned soup for cooking
- Canned fruit & veggies
- Brownie and cake mixes
- Frosting
- Tuna packages
- Sugar/Flour
- Potato and tortilla chips
- Jar cheese (like cheese whiz)
Here are some items that I have personally tried and
do not care for, of course others may not agree -
- Hamburger (too much fat)
- Pizza
- Bread/buns (flavor is okay but has a short shelf life)
- Fabric softener (low quality)
- Powdered drink mixes (similar to crystal light)
- Peanut butter (lacks flavor)
- Hot dogs (too much fat)
- Instant oatmeal (clumps too much)
To give you and idea of how their prices compare, The Aldi Connection has a graph for you to look at, here is the link -
